![]() Select the background layer and duplicate it (Ctrl – J) to create “Background copy” then move it to the top of layers and rename it “Color”. Rename the new layer as “Lightness” and convert your image to RGB (Image – Mode – RGB Color). Now you have the lightness channel as a layer. Deselect (Ctrl – D) now click on the Layers tab and create a new (Layer – New – Layer) and paste from the clipboard (Ctrl - V). Select the entire Lightness channel and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl – A to select and then Ctrl – C to copy to the clipboard).Ĭlick on the Lab Channel so we activate all channels and we get our color image again. (Note, The lightness channel is the one where the “detail” is LAB Color mode mixes this “detail” channel with a and b which hold the color). Click on the Lightness channel and your image will turn to black and white since you activate this channel hiding the rest. If working in ACR or a RAW converter, get the image into your host software and finish any process to get the best of your picture. I tend to work in 16 bit since it gives more tones to avoid banding or posterization. In this step is where I apply Painting with Light or I smooth the skin in people. You can do that from your software and favorite method Since I use Photoshop, I prefer doing it in ACR. Adjust white balance, exposure, color saturation, contrast, etc.
